Working Time Directive


Dear managers,

You will know that the Working Time Directive requires that employees may work only 48 hours per week, averaged over a 17 week period, unless they choose to ‘opt-out’.

Opting out requires completion of a simple form, but some colleagues have not completed this. Thanks to your efforts, we have made great progress in reducing this issue, but we need to do more. Please encourage any colleagues who have not opted out and wish to work more than 48 hours to complete the legal form; once completed the form should be returned to HR Shared Services Admin Manager, Gemma Fuller.

We will also be posting a message in the Employee portal, so that colleagues are aware of this requirement and can complete the form themselves. For those that do not have printer/scanner facilities, we will accept name and date only (ie no signature) on the form, provided the form is returned from the employees’ email address.

On 3 November, we will impose a flag in Timegate on all employees who are currently working more than 48 hours average but have not opted out. This will help you identify colleagues who need to opt-out, if they wish. The flag will not prevent you from rostering the colleague – but please do take immediate action in each case to ask the colleague to sign an opt-out. Colleagues who do not opt out may not work more than 48 hours.
